If you have seen other parts of my Website, you will already know that I am a project manager for a creative digital agency. You may also be curious enough to have found out that I am a closet geek when it comes to programming. There is something very rewarding in solving a problem efficiently by understanding all of the elements and going through all the possibilities until the most obvious and beneficial one is found. I guess you could call me a student of logic!

What you will have not found out no matter how hard you searched is that as well as having an interest in how computers work, I am also interested in how people work! We all know that sometimes logic does not apply when looking at some peoples decisions, but the structure is much the same. Computers have processors we have brains. Computers have functions we have behaviours. Computers have pre-determined rules we have belief systems. The most important thing is the programming, Computers can be programmed to do something regardless of if it wants to and so can we. Don’t believe me? Have you ever seen a very small child with almost no life experience, no pre-requisites of good or bad, fear or comfort, look at a spider and scream? No? Now ask yourself, how many older people do you know that would literally jump out of their skin? And they wanted to do that right?

The thing is when it comes to programming software, is that it takes lots of patience, skill and knowledge. You need to know tens of different software languages not to mention skills such as incredible aptitude for problem solving, mathematics and creativity.

So if we are programmed on a sub-conscious level to fear spiders or wash our hands 100 times a day then why can’t we re-programme ourselves to not fear spiders or wash less often?*

The answer is, we can! And for the most part it is a lot easier than computer programming! There are many subtleties’ around edge but I can be as simple as saying the right words at the right time.

*Within reason! Some people should wash more than others. Don’t worry, you know who you are and if you don’t then if you ever find yourself stood next to me on a sweaty tube then i will make sure you know!
